Why a CO2 Heat Pump?

A natural refrigerant that outperforms

Most heat pumps use synthetic refrigerants. Panasonic uses R744 (CO2) - a natural refrigerant that is better for the planet and better in the cold.

Extremely Low Environmental Impact

CO2 has a very low Global Warming Potential, making it one of the most environmentally friendly heating options available.

High Energy Efficiency

A high C.O.P. significantly reduces energy consumption and running costs, and integrates with your solar PV for even greater savings.

Reliable Cold-Climate Performance

Engineered to deliver hot water at 63 degrees C even in the coldest conditions, where conventional heat pumps struggle.

How does the Panasonic CO2 heat pump work?

Heat from the air, hot water with less cost

  • Lowest global warming potential and high energy efficiency
  • CO2 refrigerant is natural, efficient and non-flammable
  • Consistent hot water even in alpine regions
  • Sustainable and future-proof technology
A Panasonic CO2 heat pump extracts heat from the air around us, heating your hot water efficiently with less cost.

An air-to-water heat pump is a highly efficient system that uses heat from the ambient air for hot water production. Its heat energy output is about three to five times as high as the electricity input required to run it.

The Panasonic CO2 heat pump produces domestic hot water at 63 degrees C without the need for any electric element backup, even at an outside temperature of -10 degrees C.

Complete System Model Numbers

Every Panasonic configuration, decoded

A complete Panasonic CO₂ system is identified by its heat pump and tank combined, written as [heat pump]-[tank] — for example HE-UM60CR-PHE-315ASR is the 6.0 kW heat pump with the 315 L stainless steel tank. These are the model numbers on your quote and your Solar Victoria rebate paperwork.

Locally made rebateAll ten systems use Australian-made tanks and qualify for the Solar Victoria locally made incentive — a rebate of up to $1,400 (eligibility criteria apply), rather than the standard $1,000.
NewGen recommends

For most Melbourne & Victorian homes we fit a stainless steel (ASR) tank — no sacrificial anode to inspect or replace, plus excellent corrosion resistance. Our three most-installed systems:

Common Questions

Panasonic CO₂ heat pumps in Melbourne — your questions answered

Does the Panasonic CO₂ heat pump work in Melbourne winters?

Yes. The Panasonic CO₂ heat pump delivers hot water at 63°C without the need for any electric element backup, even at outdoor temperatures of −10°C — far colder than Melbourne's coldest mornings. CO₂ refrigerant is the best-performing refrigerant in cold climates, which is why these systems are also used in alpine regions.

Who installs Panasonic CO₂ heat pumps in Melbourne?

NewGen Solar & Heat Pumps supplies and installs the full Panasonic CO₂ range across Melbourne and Victoria. Our team of accredited plumbers and electricians have installed thousands of hot water heat pumps since 2012. We can also handle all applicable rebates as part of every installation, typically provided as an upfront 'point of sale' discount.

How long does installation take?

Installations are almost always completed in a single day, with hot water restored the same day. The Panasonic split-system design gives flexible placement options for the heat pump and tank.

What rebates are available in Victoria?

There are three rebate incentives in Victoria that reduce the cost of a Panasonic CO₂ heat pump. For new homes, only the federal Small-scale Technology Certificates (STCs) apply. For existing homes, STCs apply plus another rebate called VEECs through Victorian Energy Upgrades (VEU), and some households also qualify for the Solar Homes hot water rebate. NewGen confirms your eligibility and handles the paperwork before installation.

How much does a Panasonic CO₂ heat pump cost installed in Melbourne?

The installed price depends on the heat pump model (4.0 kW or 6.0 kW), tank material type & size (250 L, 315 L or 400 L) and installation parameters, with up to three rebate schemes reducing the final cost for eligible households. Most Panasonic CO₂ systems come in between $3,900 and $6,900 fully installed after applicable rebates. Call 1300 878 888 for a free fixed quote including all applicable rebates.

Can I buy a Panasonic CO₂ heat pump on a supply-only basis?

Yes. While NewGen installs systems for homeowners across Melbourne and Victoria, we also sell the full Panasonic CO₂ range on a supply-only basis — typically to builders and plumbers managing their own installations. Call 1300 878 888 for supply-only pricing and availability.

Which areas does NewGen service?

NewGen supplies and installs across all Melbourne metropolitan suburbs and much of regional Victoria.

What is the model number of a complete Panasonic CO₂ hot water system?

A complete Panasonic CO₂ system combines a heat pump and a storage tank, and its model number joins the two as [heat pump]-[tank]. The heat pump is either HE-UM40CR (4.0 kW) or HE-UM60CR (6.0 kW), and the tank is one of the Australian-made PHE tanks — so a full system reads, for example, HE-UM60CR-PHE-315ASR. NewGen supplies ten configurations across 250 L, 315 L and 400 L tanks.

What does HE-UM60CR-PHE-315ASR mean?

HE-UM60CR-PHE-315ASR is a complete Panasonic CO₂ hot water system: the 6.0 kW HE-UM60CR heat pump paired with the 315 litre PHE-315ASR stainless steel tank. The first half identifies the heat pump output, the second half identifies the tank's capacity and material (ASR = stainless steel, AGR = vitreous enamel).

Which Panasonic CO₂ model numbers are eligible for the Solar Victoria hot water rebate?

All ten of NewGen's Panasonic CO₂ systems are on Solar Victoria's eligible product list and qualify for the locally made incentive — a rebate of up to $1,400, rather than the standard $1,000 — because they use Australian-made tanks. They are the HE-UM40CR-PHE- and HE-UM60CR-PHE- combinations in 250 L, 315 L and 400 L. Eligibility criteria apply; NewGen confirms your eligibility and handles the paperwork.

What is the difference between the ASR and AGR Panasonic tanks?

Both are Australian-made and carry the same 10-year parts & labour warranty. ASR tanks are stainless steel (available in 250 L and 315 L); AGR tanks are vitreous enamel (available in 250 L, 315 L and 400 L). Stainless is highly corrosion-resistant; vitreous enamel is the only option in the 400 L size.

Should I choose a stainless steel or vitreous enamel tank for my Panasonic system?

For most homes in Melbourne and across Victoria, NewGen recommends a stainless steel (ASR) tank: there's no sacrificial anode to inspect or replace, and it's highly corrosion-resistant. Our three most-installed systems are all stainless — HE-UM40CR-PHE-250ASR and HE-UM40CR-PHE-315ASR for typical households, and HE-UM60CR-PHE-315ASR where hot-water demand or faster recovery matters. Vitreous enamel (AGR) tanks are a good choice too, and the 400 L size is vitreous only. We'll help you choose the best tank for your site and situation when we quote.
